SOLAR Technologies Explained

Solar Electric

Solar electric systems generate electricity from photovoltaic (PV) panels that convert the sun’s radiant energy into DC electric power, converted into 115 volts AC for household use. The solar-generated AC power is connected to your building’s wiring and LIPA power meter, allowing you to reduce your electric bill by selling your excess power to LIPA. Solar Hot Water

Solar water heaters for domestic hot water typically use a roof-mounted flat plate collector panel or evacuated tubes (note: too detailed-delete) that contain fluid that is heated by the sun’s energy. The heated fluid is pumped into an insulated storage tank in the house where the heat is transferred to the domestic hot water supply used for cooking, drinking, bathing and laundry. If needed, additional hot water is supplied by a back-up heat source. More information on Solar Hot Water

Solar Pool Heater

Solar pool heaters extend the swimming season in spring and fall by pumping filtered pool water through solar collectors mounted near the pool or on a roof and returning heated water to the pool. Unlike solar domestic water heaters, the solar pool heater collectors directly heat the pool water. Solar pool heaters are used independently or in combination with a gas or oil-powered pool heater to reduce heating costs.

Geothermal Heat Pump

Geothermal systems use the constant 55 degree temperature of the earth to help heat and cool a house. A geothermal ground-source heat pump is a heat-exchange device, similar to a refrigerator. In the winter, the heat pump pushes refrigerant through loops of underground tubes six feet or deeper to bring heat from the 55 degree earth into the house, reducing the need to burn fossil fuel. In the summer, the heat pump works in reverse, transferring excess heat from the house into the 55 degree earth, reducing the load on air conditioning.
