SOLAR POOL HEATERS Explained

Solar pool heaters extend the swimming season by pumping filtered pool water through solar collectors and returning heated water to the pool. Solar pool heaters are used alone or in combination with a conventional pool heater to reduce heating costs. A solar pool heater has no operating cost and requires no maintenance beyond normal pool winterizing procedures.

Solar Pool Heaters include the following elements

  • Solar Collector:  a roof or rack-mounted panel of tubes through which pool water is circulated to and heated by the sun.

  • Pump: to circulate water through the collector and back to the pool. Usually the existing pump is sufficient.

  • Thermostat bypass: to stop pool water from circulating through the solar collector when the pool has reached the desired temperature.

  • Filter:  to remove debris before water is pumped through the collector

  • Flow control valve: automatic or manual device that diverts pool water through the solar collector

Solar pool heaters differ from solar domestic hot water heaters in the following ways

  • Heat water directly rather than use a heat exchange tank
  • Raise larger volume of water to lower temperatures
  • Are compatible with chlorinated and salt water systems
  • System auto drains when off.
